The spider appeared on my ceiling one night,
its long legs pressed into a straight line
as it waited completely still for a better time
to trap the insects that gather above the lamp.
For the rest of the evening, I steal quick glances
at it, wondering if I should catch it and release
it back outside where I won't have to fret
or should I leave it alone, out of my reach,
to keep the short-lived insects off my desk
where the ants come to carry off the corpses.
