In the dark, I walk along the pavers,
my bare feet seeking the smoother ones
as I weave a path onto the dirt lawn
and then up the slope of the sidewalk.
I hurry forward, feeling tense, anxious.
and silly that the stories about snakes
we shared last night have reminded me
I should be afraid of things I can't see.
Inside, I buffer myself with flip-flops
too flimsy to provide any protection
from anything except my own fears.
